I learned something the other night while watching PBS. (Yes, I am the dork that watches PBS to learn something!) I saw a special series that was about Queen Victoria and her country’s history during her reign. One episode specifically showed the events that occured in India. I never knew this but India wasn’t conquered by the UK. They were conquered by a corporation! For 100 years, India was ruled by the East India Company. They had their own army and kept people under their thumb through military force. They began ruling India in 1757 and ended their reign in 1858 after a series of massacres. The corporation wanted the Indians to convert to Christianity and missionaries didn’t exercise much tolerance. When the East India Company fell, Queen Victoria stepped in. She promised religious tolerance and a better life for the Indians and therefore, India became a part of her empire directly rather than through a third party. So for all of you folks who think less government is best and having corporations run our nation is rad… here’s a sample of what might be to come.
